All-State Audition Materials
6th, 7th, and 8th grade band students are strongly encouraged to audition for All-State, Region, and County bands.
This is a great opportunity to compete against other band students across the state!

Audition Requirements
Click each item below for more details.
Major Scales (15 points)
- Play from memory in any order at any tempo; 2-minute time limit
- Printable scale sheets by instrument
Chromatic Scale (5 points)
- Minimum tempo 96; play in 8th notes or triplet 8ths
- Chromatic scales are printed at the bottom of scale sheets (linked above with major scales)
Solo/Etude (30 points)
- Solos can be found here:
- Professional Recordings of Etudes
- Percussion: If you register for mallet/battery percussion you must play BOTH the snare and mallet solos.
Sight-Reading (30 points)
- Play a completely new [short] piece of music after studying it silently for 30 seconds. (Guidelines here)
Terms (5 points)
- Define 5 musical terms, randomly selected from this list.
- The terms will be shown to students during auditions, not read aloud. A group of terms will be listed on a sheet along with multiple choices of definitions. The students are to say the term aloud and give the correct answer. Click Here to view an Example Term Card.
Tone (15 points)
This is for beauty, control, knowledge of characteristic sound, and ability to use this knowledge to the maximum effectiveness.

You will be notified the Monday after your Region audition if you qualify.)

Commitment
If you are selected, you must commit to participate in the corresponding clinic (dates and locations below):
Region One Honor Band Clinic
February 22-23 (all day both days)
Location Furman University
SC All-State Band Clinic
March 15-17 (all day each day)
Furman University (Greenville, SC)
Registration Cost and Deadline
Cost: $12 per student
Registration Deadline: Friday, October 26, 2018
All money is non-refundable.
Performance Standard
All students must play their entire audition for Mr. Scott before they will be allowed to participate in the event. This allows Lead to be well represented in the musical community and it prevents a bad experience for our students. Students that are not prepared by the time of the audition will have their audition canceled and will receive no refund.
